Aimée here! Anyone who knows me knows that I am a trivia fanatic! Some of you may have even joined me for my weekly Zoom trivia sessions last year during quarantine. For this week’s collab piece, I put together a trivia slide deck specifically on the High School Musical trilogy, and the other ladies of OTF competed against one another. You probably won’t be terribly surprised by the results, but I hope you enjoy the journey. I almost wish I’d given some kind of special points for funny answers!

Our Pick: Kenny Ortega, director/choreographer for HSM 1, 2, & 3!
Is there anything Kenny Ortega didn’t have his hands in? Not only the HSM movie franchise (he is not affiliated with the other HSM projects), but he was the choreographer for some *important* 80s movies like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Pretty in Pink, St. Elmo’s Fire, Dirty Dancing (he’s the fucking choreographer for my favorite movie????), as well as Newsies, Hocus Pocus, and much more.
As for High School Musical, Mr. Ortega directed and choreographed all three movies and, as Aimée and Kayla pointed out, only got better as time went on, like a fine wine. Kenny? Since we’re on a first-name basis at this point, I just gotta say that you’re a mad genius. I know you don’t need us lowly fans to tell you that you’ve inspired young kids (like myself) to make fake music videos—or quite literal music videos as some of us forced our parents to film us dancing/singing along in the High School Musical Dance-Along—but it’s true. I am certainly no dancer, but thanks to you I thought I was. Stay golden, good sir.
Show Your Support: The Audre Lorde Project
This month we are spotlighting OTF writer, Blaze’s pick, The Audre Lorde Project. ALP is a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Two Spirit, Trans, and Gender Non-Conforming People of Color community organizing center in the New York City area. First brought together by Advocates for Gay Men of Color (a multi-racial network of gay men of color HIV policy advocates) in 1994, the ALP is committed to struggling across differences and seeking to responsibly reflect.
Their guiding principles prioritize the collective histories of LGBTSTGNC people of color and the struggle against discrimination and oppression. The ALP is a home base for LGBTST peoples of African/ Black/ Caribbean, Arab, Asian & Pacific Islander, Latina/o, and Native/Indigenous descent. They wholeheartedly believe that services and organizing efforts are most successful when they involve the communities served, so ALP creates and supports decision-making and organizational structures that represent the communities they serve. The ALP knows competent skills and expertise already exist in the LGBTSTGNC people of color communities, but they often go underutilized. Therefore, ALP supports and promotes the work of existing and emerging LGBTST people of color organizations as well as the efforts of LGBTSTGNC people of color cultural workers and activists.
