This New Suns is going to be unorthodox as I’m going to speed review Virgo season (our current season) and the next two months after that. A personal goal is to finish the rest of the Zodiac year in groups like this, but whenever that happens, it will probably be late (as this one is — which is so not very Virgo of me) so we’ll see. So strap in folks, cause this is going to be a long one.
VIRGO
August 23 - September 21
LIGHTS:
analytical, intellectual, steadfast, responsible, professional, methodical, organized, reliable, useful, logical, meticulous, thoughtful, memorable, honest, trustworthy
DARKS:
hypercritical, controlled, intense, overly-sensitive, reserved, worrisome, sarcastic, perfectionist, argumentative, stubborn, high-strung, anxious, fussy, demanding
Vibes of Season:
This Virgo season found us with seven planets retrograding and a supermoon in Pisces no less. As of today (Sep 3rd), Mercury, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto are all in retrograde, with Venus just stationing direct today and Jupiter about to begin its retrograde journey tomorrow. The start of Virgo season has been… rocky to say the least—very un-Virgo like actually—but as with every retrograde, there is the stationing-direct, the settling back down, the continuing, which is quite Virgo-like.
I’d like to say that because Virgo is an Earth sign, she comes with built-in grounding techniques and is capable of taking these retrogrades and supermoons in stride, but, like, personally, and I mean with the most love of having so many dear Virgo friends, Virgos are the weirdest of all the Earth signs with Taurus probably being the most “normal” sign of the three (if not of all the signs, actually. Sorry Caps but it’s true). Virgo is very organized but can be easily thrown off their game and with the current astrological happenings, it’s probably felt pretty overwhelming. Remember, through everything, breathe. If there’s one thing these retrogrades remind us is that we are human first, foremost, and finally—the universe moved before us and will continue moving around and after us too. Perfection is not only unreal, but it isn’t even something the universe strives for; she embraces the chaos, so can you.
Virgo Affirmations:
I forgive myself—and others!—for being human, for making mistakes, and for learning and trying again.
Achieving devotion to my processes, to my routines, to my needs, is the best thing I can do for my success.
…and one from Chani: “I’m not striving for perfect, just a deeper understanding of my process.”
Important Virgo Dates:
23AUG: Mercury Retrograde begins
Buckle up everyone as we begin another few weeks of Mercury Retrograde. All the classic Mercury retrograde naughties will come out to play: expect hallucinated emails (true story), missing daily items that reappear even more mysteriously (also true story), and really just a general feeling of being more mess and less free (super true story). Having this retrograde begin at the start of Virgo season is pretty rude by Mother Nature’s standard as Virgos tend to obsess over perfection, timeliness, order, and consistent structure. Work on communicating clearly and pausing before speaking.
25AUG: Sydney’s Birthday!
30AUG: Blaze’s Birthday! + Full Supermoon in Pisces
Full Moons are times of heightened activity, feelings, and revelations. This Full Moon, also known as the Sturgeon Moon or the Green Corn Moon (*insert Pocahontas gif*), represents the afterglow of summer and the abundance of crops and resources. This night’s moon will take place in Pisces, which encourages each of us to commit to our dreams of the future. These dreams are your responsibility to make true. Feed them, no matter what the world says.
03SEP: Venus Retrograde ends
Though Mercury Retrograde has begun, that pesky, rose-colored-glasses-wearing Venus Retrograde has left the building! This began back on the 22nd of July and during these weeks, you may have endured some extra drama when it came to your intimacy with others. Venus retrograding wants you to evaluate your relationships to yourself and otehrs. So hopefully the calls from your ex have ceased and you can go about your business.
04SEP: Jupiter Retrograde begins
Annnnd just kidding, have another retrograde—suffer more! Considered the planet of plenty and potential, when Jupiter retrogrades, it’s recommended to embrace the slow-moving of it all. Patience is a virtue, after all! You are on your way.
06SEP: Mercury Cazimi
DELIGHT IN THIS RETROGRADE PAUSE! This cazimi (when a planet lines up with the sun and is then infused with the sun’s powers) is a brief respite during what is undoubtedly a merciless Mercury Retrograde—bask in it, people. According to Chani, this cazimi is extra potent because it takes place in Virgo, Mercury’s home sign.
14SEP: New Moon in Virgo
15SEP: Mercury Retrograde ends
Thank the cosmic overlords.
LIBRA:
September 22 - October 22
LIGHTS:
measured, charming, team player, imaginative, full of flair, enthusiastic, agreeable, easy-going, adaptable, creative, diplomatic, good-natured, magnetic, original
DARKS:
insincere, fixated, non-direct, fickle, faithless, indecisive, narcissistic, dependent, self-indulgent, frivolous, superficial, careless, self-centered, obscure, neglectful
Vibes of Season:
Because I can’t predict the future (yet), I’m really basing the Libra and Scorpio Vibes section on the astrological events happening during the season. Being represented by the scales, it may seem redundant to say that balance will feel critical this season, but this can manifest in various ways. It doens’t necessarily have to mean the balance of your work life and personal life—though we can all use some practice with that—but perhaps more the balance between the self and the other, between our wants and our obligations. For Libra season, we have some heavy-hitter events like the Fall Equinox, a Mercury Cazimi, and a solar eclipse happening. These events perhaps come as a respite, a balance if you will, from the rocky Virgo season with all those retrogrades—Equinoxes are times of celebration, cazimis are when a planet is empowered by the Sun’s energy, and the solar eclipse is space for rest in between it all. Also I’m getting married, so that’s gotta count for something, right?
Libra Affirmations:
I thoughtfully put myself in the equation.
Discord and disagreement—finding balance—causes growth.
…and one from Chani: “I work through my fear of failure and success so that I can honor the sacrifices of those that got me here.”
Important Libra Dates:
23SEP: Fall Equinox
On the equinoxes, the hours of the day equal the hours of the night and after this Fall Equinox, the days will be getting noticeably shorter as we ease into fall and winter. There are many ways to intune yourself with the equinox—work on your balance (both literally and metaphorically by reorganizing), invite in the positive energy of one last run before winter, and/or showing gratitude for the summer’s bounties as we prepare for winter.
29SEP: Full Moon in Aries
Also known as the Harvest Moon or the Full Corn Moon, this moon usually rises early and is a time to evaluate where you are in life, get rid of old (especially bad) habits or behaviors, and take stock of what you have achieved versus what you haven’t—this moon is a great time to wipe the slate clean and start over in whatever capacity that means, just take action!
30SEP: Shelby’s Wedding!
See ya bitches there.
10OCT: Pluto Retrograde ends
Considered the planet of transformation, Pluto retrograding is your signal to evolve. Pluto is also the planet of the underworld and represents excavation—dig out your soul, examine, and sit with the dark, even though it definitely sucks and is dirty as hell. Thankfully, though, now in October those vibe were over.
14OCT: Solar Eclipse in Libra
This eclipse is your biannual cleanse from the universe, your biannual call to cleanse your cosmic system by going within for insight. This is the first in a series of Libra eclipses, so what happens now is part of a larger story that will still unfold over the next year and a half—so take notes, people.
19OCT: Mercury Cazimi
Another Mercury cazimi, just in time after what was probably a rockin’ eclipse—use this time to channel the ah-ha moment waiting for you in the sun’s path. Above all, listen.
21OCT: Venus Trines Jupiter
Venus (the planet of pleasure) joints Jupiter (the planet of abundance) in the sky for a quick dance—you do the math.
SCORPIO
October 23 - November 21
LIGHTS:
passionate, deep, resilient, strategic, logical, perceptive, observant, dedicated, vivid, imaginative, intelligent, alluring, emotionally in-tune, powerfule, loyal
DARKS:
relentless, intense, obstinate, dominating, contradictory, narcissistic, brooding, jealous, possessive, vengeful, unforgiving, secretive, destructive, immovable
Vibes of Season:
I just love the spooky, moody, dark, fall vibes that come from the start of Scorpio season. It’s officially fall at this point, Halloween is around the corner (as is winter, creeping ever closer), and the astrological happenings are that of determination, deep reflection, and emotional cleansing. It’s sweater weather not just because of the cooling air around us but because of our proximity to the underworld and the emotional long-con from the planets, as many astrological happenings have been a long time coming. I expect this Scorpio season to be one of emotional cleansing. We’ve been tested and forced to reorganize in Virgo season, then given space to celebrate in Libra season, and are now tested again, though even more so internally.
Being the most emotional sign of the Zodiac (all in my opinion, with Cancer as the close second, though usually comes across as more whiny and Pisces is generally weirder / otherworldly), Scorpio and her season is always one of inner reflection, emotional purging, and late-night transformations.
Scorpio Affirmations:
I honor any intensity that arises for me during this season as it can be a spring of fresh creative water if I channel it properly.
The depth of feelings during this season may be daunting, but it will teach me compassion for others and myself.
…and one from Chani: “I endorse my less socially acceptable parts in order to embrace the power in them. I praise the mess in me. I am a beautiful work-in-progress.”
Important Scorpio Dates:
28OCT: Lunar Eclipse in Taurus
This is the last North Node eclipse in Taurus for nearly two decades, concluding the journey of whatever you’ve been releasing over the past couple of years. Ask yourself how have you grown in the past two years? What is one way you’ve honored your wins or progress, and where can you do that more?
Also the Hunter’s Full Moon, this eclipse is extra spicy. As the Hunter’s Moon or the Blood Moon, this full moon usually appears in an orange color and is quite large as it rises early. It brings about the shift in season, we are done with fall at this point and winter has crept in, though this isn’t necessarily a bad thing—the air is rich with potential for transformation. Remember: your health and systems are what keep you going, tune them up.
31OCT: Samhain / Halloween
As if there couldn’t be a creepier time for a Full Blood Moon Eclipse, let’s also make it Samhain. Meaning “summer’s end,” Samhain is a mystical, pagan holiday when it’s believed the veil between this world and the next is at its thinnest, allowing spirits and faeries to walk the earth. We are to remember and honor the dead during this time—souls who have departed this realm are more likely to reach out during this time and any psychic abilities will be heightened.
04NOV: Saturn Retrograde ends
The planet of time moves forward again, and it’s been a long time coming. Saturn retrograde is saying “I hope you heal” instead of making a snarky, passive-aggressive (or just plain aggressive) remark. This retrograde is also for your shadow self, the part of yourself you probably don’t dedicate enough time to learning about, listening to, and healing.
13NOV: New Moon in Scorpio
We love a good fresh start during Scorpio season. Because this season is already stingy, use this re-do to be tender with yourself and your feelings. Think before responding and saying something you maybe feel, but don’t really mean.
16NOV: Aimée’s Birthday!
17NOV: Mars Cazimi
Mars enters the heart of the sun once every two years! This fresh Mars cycle brings with it new calls to action, new goals to reach for, and extra courage and conviction to reach for them. Ask yourself: Over the next two years, I commit to building the courage to…
22NOV: Sagittarius Season begins
As always, I used my normal sources—Chani Nicholas’ You Were Born For This, Gemini 2023 , and 2023 Astro Planner, along with Joanna Marine Woolfolk’s The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need and Alison Davies’ The Mystical Year—as research.
