Welp, I think it’s safe to say that Kayla and I are not professional podcasters. Or, I’m not, at least! She at least knows what she’s doing with the editing and whatnot. I’m the one with the faulty recording equipment (aka my six-year-old laptop and Zoom).
We had anticipated putting out Episode 2 of our highly acclaimed Marriage Managed podcast, but unfortunately we recorded it on Zoom and all of Kayla’s commentary was not able to be heard. I guess Zoom got smart and started to remove what it deems “background noise.” Hopefully we will get to re-record this podcast episode again! However, in the meantime, please enjoy our first Marriage Managed podcast to tie you over.
Shit We’re Loving: WATCH
Aimée’s Pick: Girls on HBO / Max
So I only just started watching Lena Dunham’s Girls for the very first time. Well, I think I had seen part of an episode or two in the past because my siblings watched it as it aired, but it never really seemed like my cup of tea. Truthfully, in 2012, it really would not have been my cup of tea. Sex, drugs, manipulation, selfishness? I was still WAY too high on my high horse to understand any of that or to appreciate any of Girls’ beautifully flawed characters. I’ve also never really cared for Lena Dunham, and still don’t, but I certainly can no longer deny that she’s very, very talented. Like, this show is really good. WAY better than I ever expected it to be.
I think it was actually Sydney who indirectly convinced me to start watching by sharing some posts about the show on Instagram. I had always been curious, admittedly, but feared I would just find it annoying. That could not be farther from the truth, though! Now I need to get some of my other friends to watch so we can discuss it more deeply… I really want Kayla in particular to start watching, mainly because I think Shoshanna looks a lot like her sister. And we all love Shosh!
Show Your Support: Global Girl Media
For our final OTF Show Your Support, I’ve chosen Global Girl Media (GGM), which develops the voice and media literacy of teenage girls and young women, ages 14-25, in under-served communities by teaching them to create and share digital journalism designed to improve scholastic achievement, ignite community activism and spark social change.
We change the storytellers so they can change the world.
Global Girl Media empowers young women to bring their often-overlooked perspectives onto the global media stage. By turning up the volume of girls’ voices globally, GGM promotes freedom of expression and strengthens substantive journalism that addresses historically marginalized voices. We do this while also building self-esteem, leadership capacity, and 21st-century skills. Founded in 2010, we are currently active in South Africa, Kosovo, Chicago, Los Angeles, Greece, London, and the Bay Area.
You can’t be what you can’t see. Our media tells us a lot about who we are and the stories we believe about ourselves. Yet, a female POV is under-published, under-broadcast, and under-streamed compared to a male POV. Now more than ever, women and girls of color need a place at the table to change the narrative. That’s where GGM comes in.
In the OTF fashion, we have already donated $200 to Global Girl Media and we encourage you to give and/or promote what you can.
